Medicare Supplement (Medigap) Plans Explained
Original Medicare (Parts A and B) leaves you on the hook for deductibles, coinsurance, and copays. A Medicare Supplement plan — also called Medigap — is private insurance that fills those gaps so your out-of-pocket costs are predictable. Below is a quick guide to the most common Medigap plans available today.
Plan G — Most popular
Covers everything Original Medicare doesn't, except the small annual Part B deductible. After you meet that deductible, Plan G typically leaves you with $0 out-of-pocket for Medicare- approved services. The strongest coverage available to anyone newly eligible for Medicare.
Plan N — Lower premium
Similar to Plan G with slightly lower monthly premiums in exchange for small office-visit and ER copays. A strong fit if you're healthy, see doctors occasionally, and want to keep monthly costs down.
High-Deductible Plan G
The lowest premium Medigap option. You pay a higher annual deductible before benefits start, then get Plan G-level coverage. Great for healthy retirees who want catastrophic protection without a big monthly bill.
What is the best Medicare Supplement plan?
There isn't one "best" plan for everyone — the right Medigap plan depends on your health, budget, and how often you expect to use care. Plan G gives the most complete coverage, Plan N trades small copays for a lower premium, and High-Deductible Plan G is the most affordable monthly cost. Every Medigap plan with the same letter offers the same federally-standardized benefits no matter which carrier you choose — so price and company stability are the main things to compare.
Medigap vs Medicare Advantage
Medigap works alongside Original Medicare and lets you see any doctor in the country that accepts Medicare — no networks, no referrals. Medicare Advantage replaces Original Medicare with a private plan that uses networks and often bundles drug coverage. We'll walk you through both side by side so you can pick what fits your lifestyle.
